Expiry date isn't the whole story
A passport can be "in date" and still be refused. Many destinations require extra validity beyond your travel dates:
Who does each rule apply to?
- British passports: the full set — 3 months after departure and the 10-year issue rule for the EU, 6-month rules in much of Asia and the Middle East, and 'valid for your stay' in the USA.
- EU passports: inside the EU there are no minimum-validity rules — a valid passport or ID card is enough. The 3-month Schengen rule still applies when EU citizens travel to the USA, Asia and elsewhere.
- American passports: no validity rules for returning home, but the same 6-month rules apply when visiting Asia and the Middle East, and 3 months plus the 10-year issue rule for Schengen countries such as Spain and France.
A simple rule of thumb
Treat your passport as expiring 6 months early. Add the time your passport office needs (often several weeks, longer in peak season) and you arrive at renewing roughly a year ahead.
How to check your passport expiry
The expiry date is on the photo page. Write it somewhere you'll actually see it — or add it to DocsPocket and get a reminder 12 months and 6 months before.
Frequently asked questions
How early should I renew my passport?
Aim to renew 9–12 months before it expires. That covers 6-month validity rules at many destinations plus processing time at your passport office.
What is the 6-month passport rule?
Some countries refuse entry unless your passport is valid for at least 6 months after you arrive. Others, like the Schengen area, require 3 months beyond your departure date.
Can I travel with a passport that expires soon?
Sometimes, but it depends on your destination's rules and the airline. If your passport has less than 6 months left, check before you book.
