Passport validity by country
Passport validity for France
France is in the Schengen area. For British and other non-EU passport holders, the usual rule is a passport valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave, issued within the last 10 years. EU citizens only need a valid passport or ID card.

The rules at a glance
- Valid at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area.
- Issued within the previous 10 years on the day you enter.
- EU citizens can travel with a valid national ID card or passport.
What applies to your passport
British passports
- Both rules apply to you since Brexit: 3 months' validity after you leave, plus the 10-year issue rule.
- A passport issued more than 10 years before you arrive can be refused even if the expiry date is still in the future.
- Check the issue date on the photo page, not just the expiry date.
EU passports
- No minimum validity beyond your trip — a valid passport or national ID card is enough.
- The 3-month and 10-year rules do not apply to EU citizens travelling within the EU.
US passports
- The same 3-month and 10-year Schengen rules apply to American passport holders.
- US adult passports are issued for 10 years, so the issue-date rule rarely bites — but check it if you renewed early or added extra pages.

Frequently asked questions
How long must my passport be valid to visit France?
For British and most other non-EU visitors, at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen area, and issued less than 10 years before you arrive. EU citizens just need a valid passport or ID card.
Does the 10-year rule really matter?
Yes. Older passports issued more than 10 years ago can be refused even if the expiry date is still in the future. It applies to British and other non-EU passport holders, not to EU citizens.
General guidance only. Entry and passport rules change — always confirm with the official government website of your destination and your passport office before you travel.
